Getting input from a PS3 sixaxis controller without bluetooth

Getting input from a PS3 sixaxis controller without bluetooth

Every guide on the internet seems to think the sixaxis can only be connected to a computer by bluetooth, and only if it pairs by usb.
Since I don't have bluetooth it makes no sense to me that it should require it in the first place if I can just connect it by usb.
I can move the mouse and get xev response from the joysticks if I install xserver-xorg-input-joystick but not the buttons. Starting qtsixa disables even that small input.
qtsixa by the way can recognize my controller, just not make it do anything.
If I have any input I can script it to do what I want manually, but as it is I'm not getting anything.
